Zaragoza, 3 August 2026. Today we begin preparing seedlings of brassicas, mustards, beetroot and spinach for the autumn garden. The summer garden is still facing the most demanding temperatures of the year, but the calendar is already asking us to look towards the next season.

The sowing date changes according to the variety, the planned transplant date and the climate of each area. This reference belongs to our garden and the Ebro Valley; we do not present it as a universal rule. Germination, seedling development and transplant timing will be recorded in the following field-journal entries.

When to sow cabbages in Zaragoza

August means working with two calendars at once. The first belongs to summer crops, which still occupy space and demand water. The second belongs to brassicas, which need to get started so they can reach autumn with enough development before transplanting.

This selection brings together different brassicas, leafy crops, mustards and beetroot so that we can compare their development as the season advances. We will keep every variety identified from the seedling stage to preserve traceability when it is time to assess transplanting.

How we will prepare the seedlings

The strategy is to start indoors, where we can control temperature during the first days and maintain steady moisture. We will prepare the growing medium, distribute the seeds according to the inventory and label every combination of box, tray, plant and variety.

When maximum temperatures begin to fall below 40 °C, we will move the trays outdoors in a planned way. This will begin a two-week hardening period before final transplanting, allowing the plants to gradually adjust to light, wind and temperature changes in the garden.

Our management criteria for this first stage are:

  • Check the moisture of the growing medium and the indoor temperature every day.
  • Keep every cell labelled to preserve sowing traceability.
  • Move the trays outdoors when maximum temperatures fall below 40 °C.
  • Complete two weeks of outdoor hardening before final transplanting.
  • Record the first shoots and any changes to location or watering.

💡 Field note: We are not trying to expose the trays to extreme heat from day one. First we will control the indoor conditions; afterwards, moving outdoors will be part of the hardening process rather than an abrupt change immediately before transplanting.

What we expect to observe

At the close of this entry there are still no shoots to record. We do not yet know when the first seedlings will emerge, whether the four groups will develop at the same pace or whether we will need to adjust their location or moisture management.

That uncertainty is not a problem in the journal; it is precisely what we want to document. This seedling batch, in this Zaragoza summer, will provide the answer.
